I always find surround sound/home cinema very distracting, I want the sound to come from the picture position, I've set a few up for people (as per the books) and I'm sure that having sounds from all around simply makes you think that's a good sound.

The tiny cabinets these days does lose a lot of the old wood TV cabinet quality.

samsung have the worst sound of ALL flat screen tellies.

Lg have their sound tuned by some famous sound producer, so about the best on the market.

that lg is equivalent to a 5 series samsung, but 2" bigger, 300% better sound and similar picture.

I've changed my mind best 42" under 700

as always 95% of people are wrong, everyday people tell me how good their samsung telly sounds

most home cinemas are pretty average, but if set up correctly will give vast improvments over most tv's sound.  Position of centre speaker is most critical, even if just using front speakers and subwoofer.

majority of reason for poor sound on flat panels is penny pinching by manufacturers - if you've heard sonys 'golfball' cinema system, you'll understand small speakers can sound great.

have been running my Yamaha pro logic amp with 5 speakers (mission 765i fronts and 770 centre and rear ) for over 10 yrs

sound is awesome

only way to get good surround sound is to purchase separates
