Ooooo I hope not as the engine has not done a great mileage since rebuild, I haven't a compression tester but it maybe on my purchase list, but I hope not.

kill it with the choke
then no throttle when you come to kick it up, this only works if you intend to leave the bike for  say 45 minutes, if you do kill it on the choke and go to start it again say after 10 minutes then you'll need to use wide open throttle to get the bike started

My S1 is also a little awkward, in my case no throttle then stabbing the choke on the first pop does the trick, miss it or overdo it and it's the same scenario (including the crowd).

It's the Goldilocks effect.
