Hi,having a close inspection of leaking oil, i"ve found it coming from the tacho drive. I removed the cable and found the whole thing submerged to the top in rusty looking oil. Will the oil seal need replacing, or can i put a bit of blue hylomar stuff in then fit a new tacho cable to stop it? If i need to replace the oil seal, does it just pull out with the protruding drive with a pair of pliers and refit the same? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mark.

Yep just yank it out, the whole insert will come out.

There is a tiny oil seal inside the the insert (it can be a bugger to remove) but... also have a look where the seal sits on the tacho drive shaft itself, cos it can get very pitted and just rip up a new seal in no time.

Also on the outside of the insert there is an 'O'Ring to seal the insert into the engine cover, this will almost certainly be chewed up and need replacing, it has to be a specific size nothing else will do, too small and the insert will spin and not seal, too big and you'll simply shave the outer edge off when forcing it back in.

It's common to have oil leaks there.

I should have added that I'm sorry I didnt spot that one the other week.. Doh!

I had the oil/tacho thing once (it lubricates the cable a treat), there was oil streaming across the petrol tank as I was riding... very worrying. but blowing the crankcase breather pipe clear soon stopped it.
