Hi guy`s

Can anyone help as I have a Problem with starting my KH400 when it is cold it takes about 5 or more kicks, and on average of ten kicks before it will start especially when it is hot but if I push it starts in about 5 yards of pushing,
it has original CDI box and coils, brand new fully charged Battery, I have check the air gap between the flywheel and pick-up`s and checked out the pick up coils and generator coils, Have gone from Nippon denso plugs to NGK....also have total new carb overhauled kits, but now don`t know what else to do, she runs great out on the road just the starting problem .... HELP!

You can see my Bike on Simon`s site second picture down from the top at the minute, ( green one ) http://www.kawasakitripleparts.com/GUESTS-GALLERY-

Cheers, Maurice  :-D

Hi Maurice
it could be that the elec iggy is starting to go, thats a good symptom, hard to start, running on all 3 ok? ticks over ok?
how was it before you fitted the carb kits?...

seems to go ok when the crank is spinning, sounds like not getting the volts to fire the iggy from kicking it,.guess its a process of elimination,.
how clean is your fuel tap?, lots of ideas, just nailing down the right one,.

Hi,

Well don`t know what it was like before the carb rebuild, also the fuel tap is fine that has all been stripped and cleaned with new seals etc, as the whole bike I built from just a frame up as that is all I had from getting a frame and half an engine and V5 for 99p.... yes I did say 99p    so all the parts I had to get for it so that is why I don`t know where to go now with this problem   I have allways had thoughts about the CDI box being a problem as people have said to me that they were not very good in the first place but I did not know where to get a good working one from as did not have the right tools to check if my one was ok or not, i did ask Simon if he had a good working one but sadly he did not

I did email many times Boyer Bransden if I could fit one of there Ign kits but never got a reply from them, so if there is any body out there that Knows of a very good CDI box That wont break my bank.........  it`s only made of plastic now after buliding the bike... I mean miss Piggy as she is very easy to break now  :-D  or know how to fit a Boyer Bransden one please let me know

Cheers, Mo

you need all the wiring from a 250 and coils to fit boyer, alloy endcovers too, my 400 runs on it,.

the last cdi i had rb bought it, £30 cheap, they are dam hard to find a good one, 8yrs ago, not many people scrapping 400's now !!

Higgspeed might know if theres somat' to replace cdi, his 400 runs small modern coils?!,.

5 kicks on a 400 is way too many, so does sound like your low speed windings are screwed.

some people say how good the 400 cdi is, but 95% of people junk it as theyre shite :D .

as brian said get kh250 loom, coils and points iggy, good to go.

then put boyer on if you like

Hi simonh

This is what I got from the company who would do the rewind of the coils... they are not the same who your mate used ;-)

Electrex World Limited

We offer a year’s guarantee and premature failure is very rare.  Source coils of this design can suffer from electrolytic degradation of the wire due to moisture ingress if the machine is not used very often, so you need to keep it dry.
