S1 Petrol Tap Leak

Restoration on my old 72 S1 is 99% there only some minor items to address. For example the cylindrical rubber in the petrol tap seems to have dried up and shrunk so that the lever is a very loose fit which would cause a leak.

Any fixes for this problem?
The Wolfman

Do you mean the nylon cone with holes in the side?

They are unobtainable, best bet is to find a secondhand tap (hopefully with it intact).

About the only help you can give yours is to clean the inside of the tap where it sits using something really fine, wire wool, Solvol etc to remove any fusty mazac pips and improve the seal.

if it is a loose fit, it might benefit from a tiny amount being filed off the narrow end to prevent it reaching the back of the tap before it seals against the sides.

I fucked about with different size o rings and eventually cured the leak
The Wolfman

that's interesting Simon, where did you fit the O ring?
g6mow

I put an o ring behind the cone to push it forward and one at the front on the actual lever.

Does that make sense
The Wolfman

Hmm, yes I see but I thought that putting one behind would prevent the cone from sealing against the inside of the bore.

Did it work completely ie, no external leak and no seep into the carbs?

the plastic cone is in the KH taps the internals of the early S series taps are a rubber fitment,
soak the old one in a silicone based lube, a good de-greaser does this too,
perhaps it will re-juvinate the suppleness ?,
a v. hard new part to find,.

I'm talking about the early tap with the rubber cone,

Yes it cured all leaks.
The Wolfman

I see, I've not met the rubber cone just the later ones.

Thanks for the replys, yes it is the early one which has a rubber barrel shaped sleeve with holes in it but this has hardened and shrunk so no longer provides a seal
