Project S2A electrical anomaly

I turn on headlight motor begins to miss.
Check batt voltage: 13.2 to 15.3 no lights on idle / 6000.
Turn on lights 13.1 to 10.7 steady at 5000 motor misses bad particularlry # 3, turned headlight off quickly to keep from killing another Brandsen... Motor picked right back up.... It really runs sweet unless you turn on the headlight...

I am thinking bad stator. I took it out and ran it with the headlight off and it runs perfect. If the regulator or recitifier were bad something would be screwey with the charging volts even with the lights off, Right???
The voltages are are perfect with the lights off...
Electrical geniuses unite and help a brother out. I already checked all connections, made sure the ground was clean, etc...

Wishing I was at THE GAP...

Check that the battery in good condition ie not dry, have it checked for capacity or try a new one.

So you have a Boyer fitted, what is the wattage of the headlamp bulb??

The charging system is only just capable of powering a standard bike, there is little scope for extra items being added, the Boyer itself takes current otherwise destined to charge the battery, an oversized bulb will do the same, it all adds up.

If a good battery doesn't sort it and the bulb's correct then we'll start checking the stator and rectifier but first things first.

This sounds like 2smoke's problem all over again from the UK Triples Club site, members only have access there?

Tim,  Your problem sounds like a bad stator to me.  That is exactly how my bike was acting until I replaced the stator.  I used the various manuals and a multimeter to test my electric system, but could not isolate the problem.  I had to start replacing parts one at a time until I fixed it with a different stator.

Good luck to you.

P.S. You are the second S2 charging issue today, the other one was the guy in San Francisco.  I guess these are the parts that are now wearing out on our old bikes.

Sounds like I've done myself a favour at ebay then...
Not too much $ either! New rotor as well...
No big charging problem for now, but misfiring in wet weather conditions. Must be that B&B iggy.. Or?

The reason for this is the stator is a set of coils and resistance is not how they work and so measuring the resistance is not an accurate indicator of their condition, might be an idea to source a spare (or borrow one) to try one regardless.

Update on S2A electrics

Changed the regulator and rectifier and it was better, but as it turns out, not right. ( see other posts)
Called Laurie at Purple Haze and she went through Ron's stash box and found the 1100 mile original stator that goes with my motor, which she sent out Priority mail the next day.
2 day service from 1/2 way across the country     . I installed it the other day, and the motor runs so much better.  The stator was the root of this problem.
Installation was straight forward. I marked the Boyer Brandsen plate and put it back in the same place.
I get 14.05 volts with the lights on high beam  at 5000 and 12.89 at idle. I walked away from it for 5 + minutes  with the high beam on and it never missed a lick.
I had time to take it for a short test run today and the difference was like night and day. It wants to run now. The motor is very crisp, it accelerates a lot harder now that it's gettin' some fire. I backed off the throttle at 6000 and gagged it wide open in 1st and the front wheel came  6 inches off the ground. The motor pulls to 9000 ( hard from 6000 to 9000) and starts on 1 kick cold consistently for 2 days in a row (1st bike I have ever had that would start on the 1st kick cold)
I have GOT to get some tires...
It was almost a shame to take this apart , but I hate points..
