Kh400 spark or not

hi guys

had a go at the 400 last night fookin hell was it cold, there is little or no spark and its only when i turn the garage lights out that you can see a week spark ,i kept warm by kick starting the bike over
my question is theres a earth lead that the iggy plugs into, then runs up to the headlamp do you think thats were my problem lies with a bad earth, wolfie and si have said that the kh400 coils dont earth to the frame or do you think its something else :smt102
remember this was a runner before i fooked about with it

your thought and suggestions

I just started mine up last week and at first had no spark at all on any cylinder but this was traced to the kill switch which had the wires the wrong way round, there is a earth which comes from the cdi box (Black and white wire) and goes to the kill switch center terminal, but if you are getting a weak spark then does not seem the problem, but check the kill switch is working good, have you tested the windings in the magneto/stator, you can do this by unplugging the cdi box and testing with a multimeter. Also test the coils as well, Let me know if you need any more details.

Here is the service bulletin for checking the KH400 ignition (PDF file), as you can see on the second page you can do this with a multimeter and you dont need the kawasaki service tool.

I might have changed my mind again Al, looking at the circuit diagram, they are shown as being grounded at the coils, not by a wire to the harness, I will have to have a closer look next time I'm stealing your coffee, but you'll probably have her going by then anyway.

Al you misunderstood me. DEFINATELY earth to frame on kh400

so grind the mounts, then tap the threads in frame too.  Almost certainly your problem

I thought they were. Al's questioning of it, had made me second guess myself... and I had forgotten to look last time I was there.

Clean 'em up AL.

he said to me that you said that, and i said my mate had a nightmare after powdercoating and we had to grind everything down.

what you up to Al :-D
