KH250 B3 Ignition problems

Just about done everything i can think of to get bike running properly... New plug caps, leads, points, condensors , timing set with dial gauge... new air filter, cleaned out carbs... i did get it running more or less o.k. last weekend and got about 80mph from it but it was still fluffing and dogging down when come to junctions. One of the main things to confuse me is that when its running a bit lumpy on 2/3 cyls and you lift the plug cap partially off the plug of the cylinder thats a bit cold and not trying to spark then it picks up revs, put the cap back on to the plug and engine struggles, its as if there is some electrical leakage somewhere but i,m not that good at diagnosing electrical problems. can anyone shed any light on this or should i just try putting Boyer brandsen unit on...

In your list you didn't mention new plugs, but since you have gone to such lengths I reckon you musta tried some by now, which plugs do you have in there, the period books say B9HCS, most people use B9HS or even B8HS if they're not throttle jockeys.

Lifting the plug caps gives you a faster pulse to the spark and can clear oily plugs or cold wet plugs (ie as a B9HCS would be), I used to have to do that every morning back in the seventies, now unnecessary on B8s when used regularly.

A well set up points system will be fine, Boyer it by all means but if that's not the cause of yuor problem you might have wasted your money, I would say get her running first then think about the Boyer.

yep sounds like plugs to me too

remember doing that with the metal plug caps and nearly falling off   :-D

Hi,
Thanks for reply, i have put new plugs in... used about 5 now and yes its the NGK B8HS   ... These were the ones given out in the shop for the KH250... When checked manual i noticed they were B9HS but did'nt think this would be a problem, so will now get some B9HS  as its my last hope...
Will let you know how I get on.....

B8s should be better at clearing than B9s so just stick with those for a while while we rethink.....

just to check that the 'U' clip (condensor wire) to top of points nut,. is not touching backing plate.... :thumright:

I spent an hour or so on Saturday replacing the 3 condensors but will re-check u-clips just in case...   Thanks..
