hard job Starting KH400

Hi guy`s

Can anyone help as I have a Problem with starting my KH400 when it is cold it takes about 5 or more kicks, and on average of ten kicks before it will start especially when it is hot but if I push it starts in about 5 yards of pushing,
it has original CDI box and coils, brand new fully charged Battery, I have check the air gap between the flywheel and pick-up`s and checked out the pick up coils and generator coils, Have gone from Nippon denso plugs to NGK....also have total new carb overhauled kits, but now don`t know what else to do, she runs great out on the road just the starting problem .... HELP!

You can see my Bike on Simon`s site second picture down from the top at the minute, ( green one ) http://www.kawasakitripleparts.com/GUESTS-GALLERY-

Cheers, Maurice  :-D

Hi Maurice
it could be that the elec iggy is starting to go, thats a good symptom, hard to start, running on all 3 ok? ticks over ok?
how was it before you fitted the carb kits?...

seems to go ok when the crank is spinning, sounds like not getting the volts to fire the iggy from kicking it,.guess its a process of elimination,.
how clean is your fuel tap?, lots of ideas, just nailing down the right one,.
mtc1

Hi,

Well don`t know what it was like before the carb rebuild, also the fuel tap is fine that has all been stripped and cleaned with new seals etc, as the whole bike I built from just a frame up as that is all I had from getting a frame and half an engine and V5 for 99p.... yes I did say 99p    so all the parts I had to get for it so that is why I don`t know where to go now with this problem   I have allways had thoughts about the CDI box being a problem as people have said to me that they were not very good in the first place but I did not know where to get a good working one from as did not have the right tools to check if my one was ok or not, i did ask Simon if he had a good working one but sadly he did not

I did email many times Boyer Bransden if I could fit one of there Ign kits but never got a reply from them, so if there is any body out there that Knows of a very good CDI box That wont break my bank.........  it`s only made of plastic now after buliding the bike... I mean miss Piggy as she is very easy to break now  :-D  or know how to fit a Boyer Bransden one please let me know

Cheers, Mo

you need all the wiring from a 250 and coils to fit boyer, alloy endcovers too, my 400 runs on it,.

the last cdi i had rb bought it, £30 cheap, they are dam hard to find a good one, 8yrs ago, not many people scrapping 400's now !!

Higgspeed might know if theres somat' to replace cdi, his 400 runs small modern coils?!,.
simonh

5 kicks on a 400 is way too many, so does sound like your low speed windings are screwed.

some people say how good the 400 cdi is, but 95% of people junk it as theyre shite :D .

as brian said get kh250 loom, coils and points iggy, good to go.

then put boyer on if you like
g6mow

+1

250 points and coils everytime :D
180kid

although mine takes 5 or 6 from cold anyway, more when i flood it?,
when my windings went, in the middle of nowhere !!, it only ran on 2cyls,

cos you prod it like a girl :-D
180kid

hey,
if the bikes been stood for an hour or so, its cold, give it choke?, then it floods, dont need it,. i aint seen anybody kick a bike smuch as you........lol........ :)
mtc1

Hi simonh

This is what I got from the company who would do the rewind of the coils... they are not the same who your mate used ;-)

Electrex World Limited

We offer a year’s guarantee and premature failure is very rare.  Source coils of this design can suffer from electrolytic degradation of the wire due to moisture ingress if the machine is not used very often, so you need to keep it dry.
simonh

if the price is right go for it.  every so often the coils come up on ebay, but rare!  if its more than 30 40 quid. i'd just get kh250 stuff, just me though!!!
eastbournejohn

Starting.

I have found that, to avoid flooding when starting, I kick over with the petrol tap closed, and then switch it on when engine is started.
Also, re bad starting and idling, I have upped the pilot jet from the stock 20, which is woefully inadequate, to 25, and no probs with starting since, and it idles without cutting out.  The choke can be fully released after about 5 seconds from cold starting, massive improvement over stock.

Hi
I think I might be on a winner with the KH400, as I got my exciter coils back yesterday and have put them on and fingers crossed she is starting first kick when it is hot and about 3 when cold   as before it was anything from 5 - 10 or more, but as they say I wont count my chickens ;-) till next year when it will be the proof in the pudding    as that is when it will come out of hibernation and be used so as I say we will see,

Thank you all for the input just hope that do the trick

All have a Merry Christmas and hope we all have a better New year

my kh400 is a pig too start when warm, sometimes it's only a bump start which will start it, but when it's cold it will start 1st or 2nd kick, i just wonder if my exicter coils are showing there age
mtc1

well if that is the problem like mine it is not a cheap fix as it cost me £96   in total    just to have them two coils re-wound so i just hope that it is worth it and not something else that is wrong :x

Evening Ali,

Simon H reckons that if your bike won't start, it's because you kick it like a girl. :D  :D   Also, when you get to your age, your exciter coils will have given up ages ago! :-D  :-D

John.

Good idea Ali, you've got the looks. :D  :D

Paintwork looks an excellent job, nice colour scheme.  Did you get it done locally, and did you prep yourself?

Cheers,  John. :D  :D

He's certainly made a good job.  My tank has been resprayed, but not all that well, I think a couple of coats of lacquer is needed to finish it off.  Have you got his address and phone no please Ali?

Cheers,  John.

Going on to reserve after 50 miles?  That's nothing.  My bike does 10mpg on a run, and 5 mpg round town, IF I'M LUCKY.  On a quick run I have to fill up every15 miles.  My tyres don't ever do 500 miles, I get 200 miles per set, IF I'M LUCKY, and that's on hard compound tyres.  My exciter coils get so excited they have to be rewound every 1000 miles.    My bike has had 4 seizures, and has cost me £2000 a time.
50 miles to reserve?  You lot divn't nah thee's born, you wassocks.

John. (Fartimus maximus.) :-D  :-D
