Not sure about salt water but boiling in white vinegar will work.... not as a substitute for carb cleaner but to restore the look of aluminum.

Are carb bodies aluminium or a zinc alloy?

I left mine in coke overnight as this is a mild phosphoric acid. It cleaned them to the grey finish, but not shiny 'new' look.

I have just got some Wickes masonary and brick cleaner. This is 10% Hydrochloric acid and strips zinc plate off in minutes. If carbs are zinc, it would disolve them.

If they are aluminium, careful with caustic oven cleaner - it will disolve them in the end.

The mercans seem to have a polish called 'never dull'. Is it sold as another brand here? They do have it in Hein Gerike outlets...

Lets see the results of different cleaners! There must be a best chemical way.
